Excerpts from the Episode

(*Paraphrased highlights)
  • Trust yourself.

I've been in a lot of positions professionally, and throughout my education, and in my master's program where things weren't a great fit.

It made me think that there was something wrong with me.

If something isn't a great fit, then it's the environment, not you.

Continue searching and don't just try to make yourself a fit for what's currently surrounding you. Trust yourself more than anything with career placement, with education choices, with employment decisions, just all the things.

    Just trust yourself.

  • It's about achieving change and the desired change depending on the individual and what their individual needs are.

I'm passionate about not just tossing strategies to parents, teachers, other BCBAs, and RBTs that I supervise.

It's all about giving a full understanding of behavior and why behavior is happening.

Then each individual can use their environment, their own expertise, their own personalities, and the values of the environment itself to select the interventions that are the best fit based on understanding the behavior.

Behavior breakthrough is about behavior change. How that comes about is all based on the individual and the environment and how you wanna get there, solely from understanding behavior.

  • Behavioral understanding.

Educators are smart. Parents are smart. People have skills.

If we can walk in with the knowledge that everybody already has the skills, what they just need is an understanding of function, that will make a humongous change.

I hope this book provides an understanding of behavior in a way that drastically changes people's lives, people's reputations, people's diagnoses, people's views of the world, people's views of themselves— purely by understanding why behavior happens.

There are some strategies in there, but more than anything, I hope that the book gives an understanding of behavior and ties it all together so that people can change how they interact.
